And the journey has restarted

After a couple of weeks off the journey has had a reboot. My computer brain had to kick back into gear fast.

The day started with a catch up with Dorothy Burt continuation of the  Manaiakalani story.

Connection and network essentially this is bringing together not competing against each other to reach a common goal. This connection with each other is so important.

To make this connection both parties have to contribute and be an equal member. No passengers on this journey.  Connection is as powerful as the audience participation

As teachers our role is to provide opportunities for the children to connect with others on line. The focus needs to be positive and built around effective teaching.

Tuhi Mai Tuhi Atu- Write to me, Write to others -is an excellent space for our children to see what learning looks like in other parts of the country.

                              Google Sites

We had time to explore other google sites. This meant we could see what appealed to us and what didn't.

Our digital practise has to be effective to have impact. It is visible once this is online so continuing to make connections and up skilling is essential to have impact as a teacher.

A practical guide for Edtech integration  SAMR: Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, Redefinition

The SAMR model is made up of four steps—Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition. Substitution and Augmentation are considered "Enhancement" steps, while Modification and Redefinition are termed "Transformation" steps.

Learning sites have a learning purpose and not just during lockdown. However over that time we did see the incredible value in them and the ability to connect with our learners from home.

New privacy laws mean you can not have any indication of learning levels of individuals on the site.

When setting up a site it is paramount you have your audience in mind and this is also the case when making a post.

The website should be visually appealing
thinking about the theme, layout, fonts etc. This needs to be consistent across school if possible but more importantly across the Hub.

The aim is for the learner to be at the learning or requirement of the child by 3 clicks.

We had time to create our own site

Hapara
This workspace is visible where as Google classroom is only visible to those with the link. This means parents can view what the children are learning in the classroom online.

When creating site don't try to do it all at once. Focus on one area not everything all at one time.

Removing spam from a blog: go to the dashboard. On the comments box mark it as spam then delete. Always mark as spam before you delete.

Reflection

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?
  • I am really enjoying getting to delve deeper into the understanding of Manaiakalani. The story how it all unfolds and the meaning behind resonates with me and helps to see how the structure of the learning at our school has been created and built on for our school community.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional

  • I learnt to create a site. I used to look at others sites and assume this was going to well beyond my capabilities but the way the ladies have presented today have made it easy to follow. The site itself is going to take a while to create but as mentioned begin small. Think of one area to work on create it well and how you want it to be used by your learners before continuing onto the next subject or page.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

  • The site we have added youtube clips. We have begun to cut the clips to precise viewing we wish the children to see. Hopefully we have been able to remove the ads and the end part that often leads the children off to another video on youtube.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
  • I was always worried adding a youtube link for the children to view . I was concerned that it would then lead them to lots of other videos to view. I had wanted to figure out how to show just the link I wanted the children to see and not to let them go off track viewing other videos.
  • I really enjoyed to day session. There was plenty of time to play around and figure things out at your own pace.

  1. Kia ora Theresa,

It was really lovely to have you back on board this week. I know it brightened up Deb's day.

I think your site is wonderful and I'm so glad you can see practical application for the skills from today. The tip for the video's makes it easier to use YouTube with younger students and you can feel free to share that with other teachers at your school.

    Ngā mihi,
    Sharon
