Week 7 Ubiquitous Learning

Week 7

I love starting the day with a korero as a group. This is such a great way to start the day after a traffic battle this morning, time to listen and debrief and get my head in the game for today. It is also so empowering to know we are all on the same journey. We might get there at a different pace but the journey is all the same.

Ubiquitous learning

Removing the boundaries. Access available. Learning can happen anywhere at anytime rather than the traditional school hours. If a child is away from school for the day their learning isn't impinged as they have access at all times.

If it's worth teaching it's worth capturing. Rewindable learning making learning accessible to more learners. If it's worth learning, it's worth capturing.

To combat the summer slump https://summerlearningjourney.blogspot.com/

Data shows children's learning drops off during the summer break so this blog has been developed to support the continuation of learning over this time.

Teachers use their own voice to share with the children online. the children connect with this learning so much more when coming from the teacher rather than someone unknown.

Capturing learning and sharing is invaluable. Send a video to answer a colleagues question rather than writing a whole lot of notes to assist.

Ubiquitous learning means anywhere anytime any place and from anyone.

It is important that children have a practice meet so they are prepared if they have to learn outside of the school hours. This is important as updates etc occur and the children are then ready to access if we do go back into lockdown and know what to do. We practise for fire drills etc in school so perhaps this is important also to add into our planning.

Provide opportunities for learning to continue if a child is absent or for those children who need to go back over and review the learning more than once.

The learning can also continue when you are away and a reliever is in the classroom. Supporting your learners while you are away.

Apps to explore:  Chromebooks

Being cyber smart

Being smart online platform and when they are on other sites outside of our classroom space the children are then hopefully able to transfer this skill to be smart across all platforms. Empowering young people to make smart decisions when they are online.

Manaiakalani curriculaum for smart users online

We want our children to be able to make good decisions when they are online.
The school has a lot of things in place to keep our children safe so things are locked down and not accessible to the children but this is not the case at home. so parents have to be informed and present when their children are online if they do need the support.

Teachers teach the children around positive language and how to be cyber smart in the hope this is transferred to the home when children are online.

These are also good sites that have now come on board after our Manaiakalani curriculum developed in a positive way that supports children to navigate sites they are not sure about and tools to help with this.
Reinforces the children to be alert and when they need to report to an adult. Adult to respond positively and with respect to the needs of the child.

Always start the year with.......... the first 3 most important.........

Your footprint can have an affect on what job you get in the future!! What job do you want???

Pushing the positive not the negative.......Make Kindness go viral.

Manaiakalani Journey

1:1 partnership
  • Ako is a whānau or community experience

  • Engagement in the decision making eg Kawa of Care

  • Engagement through device ownership

Participation
  • Every learner can participate

  • Every teacher can be supported to become Digitally Fluent when all devices are the same

  • Engagement through device ownership

Protection
  • This should all happen behind the scenes

  • Manaiakalani partnered with Hapara to design Teacher Dashboard to make all digital learning visible

  • Partnership with N4L and Linewize for filtering

BYOD
bring your own disaster? so in 2010 they decided to avoid this acronym as not all children had access to a device and they thinking around how learning is accessible to all.

Every year in September research is undertaken to find the most robust device. At the moment it is the chrome book.
From year 1-3 look at ipads and then Year 3 up the children use chrome book. This takes the children all the way to year 13.

Digital fluency starts with the ability to use the device

The digital dig should be included at the beginning of every year.

Playing with Chrome books with the worst mouse pad on earth. This has been a good exercise in realising what our children have to work with. An exercise in patience and understanding how it is to be lost in the word of learning.

Ipads for the children in year 1-3

All ipads are signed into individual children if 1:1 however if the ipads are shared then this doesn't happen.

Stylus are a fabulous tool for the children to use as the tool emulates the use of a pencil and helps with that fine motor skill etc

The screens on an ipad break a lot easier than a chrome book. The kawa of care introduction at the beginning of the year is important.

Using Explain Everything as a resource in the classroom.

At the beginning of the year it is important to set a Kawa of care with the children so the expectation is set from the beginning how this is to be used.

This Explain everything comes with a video asking the children to follow the instructions. This allows our 5 year olds to know what to do rather than reading a set of instructions.

Tick the star that shows the correct use of an ipad in our space. Leave the star white if Mrs Norris is not doing the right thing. This leaves the children only ticking the correct thing rather than the wrong hence reinforcing the positive.

  1. Kia ora Theresa,

You have summed up the day really well and these notes will be helpful for you in the future. I thought your reflection on the frustrations of using old technology was valid and something that you will remember in the future. I also think your explain everything activity is wonderful. I love that you have brought through the positive and made it interactive for your students.

What do you think you will use from today in your classroom?

    Ngā mihi,
    Sharon
